Oz Lotto odds by division

Lotterywest publishes the odds for each division on its Oz Lotto page. They are odds per game, meaning one line of seven numbers in one draw.

The Division 1 figure is exact. There are 62,891,499 different ways to choose 7 numbers from 47, and only one of them matches the seven winning numbers. The lower divisions come up far more often, because many more combinations qualify for them.

What 1 in 51 means

Across all seven divisions, Lotterywest gives the odds of any prize as 1 in 51 per game. Most of that comes from Division 7, three winning numbers plus a supplementary at 1 in 71, and Division 6, four winning numbers at 1 in 182.

The 1 in 51 is an average over a very large number of games. A run of 51 games can hold no prize at all, or two or three. The odds describe the game over time rather than your next ticket.

Over a year of Tuesdays, one game a week comes to 52 games. On average that’s about one prize a year, and 52 chances at Division 1, or about 1 in 1.21 million across the year.

Do more games change the odds?

Each extra game adds one more combination. Ten different games give you 10 chances in 62,891,499 at Division 1, or about 1 in 6.29 million. In WA, ten games cost $14.55 on Lotterywest’s price list.

A system entry works the same way. A System 8 covers every 7-number game in 8 numbers you choose, which is 8 games, for $11.65 in WA. The Oz Lotto system price list gives every system to System 12 with its games and price.

The jackpot doesn’t move the odds. A $4 million Division 1 and a $100 million Division 1 both sit at 1 in 62,891,499 per game. Past results don’t move them either, and the Oz Lotto statistics page shows how often each number has come up and why that doesn’t carry over.

Weekday Windfall is drawn on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Lotterywest sells it as Millionaire Medley, so its row comes from that game’s page and price list.

How to read the comparison

Per game, Saturday Lotto and Weekday Windfall have the shortest Division 1 odds, since both pick 6 numbers from 45. Powerball has the longest, because you also need the one Powerball from 20. Oz Lotto sits between them.

The price of a single game differs too. In WA, an Oz Lotto game is $1.45 and a Powerball game works out at about $1.58. A Saturday Lotto game is $0.95, a Millionaire Medley game about $0.67, and a Set for Life game $0.80 per draw.

Division 1 is the third difference. Oz Lotto starts at $4 million and Powerball at $5 million, and both grow while they aren’t won. Saturday Lotto offers an estimated $6 million outside its Superdraws and Megadraws.

Millionaire Medley pays $1 million per winning entry for up to six winners. Set for Life pays $200,000 upfront and then $20,000 a month for 20 years, per winner for up to four winners.

Put together, the choice comes down to what you want from a ticket. For the shortest Division 1 odds, Saturday Lotto and Weekday Windfall lead. For a jackpot that builds each week, Oz Lotto has the smallest minimum entry of the three jackpot games. That’s $1.45 for one game in WA, with Division 1 starting at $4 million.
