When Powerball is drawn

Powerball is drawn every Thursday night. Ticket sales close at 8:00 pm AEST, which is 6:00 pm in Perth. From early October to early April, when NSW, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania move to daylight saving, sales close at 9:00 pm AEDT there. Queensland stays on AEST all year.

In WA, Lotterywest says the draw is available to watch by 7:30 pm AWST. The winning numbers above are copied from Lotterywest’s published results later that evening, and the time we copied them sits right under the numbers.

Reading the dividends table

Powerball has nine prize divisions. You play seven numbers from 1 to 35 and one Powerball from 1 to 20. Six of the nine divisions need the Powerball, which is why a ticket with only two main numbers can still win Division 9 if the Powerball matches.

Each dividend is the prize paid for one winning game. If your ticket has several games, or you played a system entry, you can win in more than one division in the same draw, and each win is paid separately. The winners column counts every winning entry across Australia; the dividend is the same whether the ticket was bought in Perth or Parramatta.

When nobody wins Division 1, the pool rolls into next Thursday’s draw. According to Lotterywest’s game guide, the Division 1 pool starts at $5 million and grows every draw it isn’t won.

Checking your ticket and claiming a prize

Online and app tickets are checked for you by the operator you bought from, and prizes are paid into your account. For a paper ticket, the quickest check is the ticket checker at any lottery retailer: scan the barcode and wait for the beep.

In WA, prizes up to $500 can be collected from any Lotterywest retailer. Larger prizes are claimed at Lotterywest’s head office in Subiaco or by mail, and Division 1 prizes go through a 14-day validation. You have 12 months from the draw date to claim. In other states, The Lott and its retailers set the rules, so check with the operator on your ticket.

Buying a ticket for the next draw

Tickets for next Thursday are on sale until sales close that evening. Outside WA and Queensland you can buy online at Oz Lotteries, an authorised reseller of The Lott’s national games; in WA, Lotterywest sells Powerball through its own site, app and retailers.

Next Thursday’s draw number and the Division 1 offer are in the result card at the top of this page. A Powerball game has the same odds whatever the jackpot is.

What time is the Powerball draw?

Powerball is drawn every Thursday. Sales close at 8:00 pm AEST (6:00 pm AWST), and Lotterywest says the draw is available to watch by 7:30 pm AWST. During daylight saving, sales close at 9:00 pm AEDT in NSW, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania.

How many numbers do you need to win Powerball?

The smallest prize, Division 9, needs two winning numbers plus the Powerball. Division 1 needs all seven winning numbers and the Powerball. The prizes and divisions guide lists all nine.

What happens if nobody wins Division 1?

Are Powerball winnings taxed in Australia?

No. Recreational gambling winnings, including lottery prizes, are not taxed in Australia (ATO ruling IT 2655). Interest you later earn on the money is taxed as usual.

How long do I have to claim a Powerball prize?

In WA, Lotterywest gives you 12 months from the date of the draw. Elsewhere, check with The Lott or the reseller you bought from, as each operator sets its own claim rules.
