Oz Lotto System 8 cost: every system price and what it covers

An Oz Lotto system entry lets you choose more than seven numbers and plays every seven-number game among them. Here you get Lotterywest’s WA price list from System 5 to System 12, the number of games in every system up to System 19, and what a System 8 returns when your numbers come up. What a system entry is

Lotterywest’s FAQ describes a system entry as playing “up to 20 of your selected numbers, and every possible combination of those numbers”. Oz Lotto draws seven winning numbers, so a System 8 means you choose 8 numbers and hold every 7-number game among them: 8 games in all.

Each extra number multiplies the combinations. A System 9 holds 36 games and a System 12 holds 792. That’s the maths, not a mood, and it is why prices climb so quickly past System 10.

Systems 5 and 6 work the other way round. You choose 5 or 6 numbers, and the entry fills the remaining places with every other number in the barrel. A System 5 comes to 861 games and a System 6 to 41.

Divide any price by its games and you land on about $1.46 a game. That matches the standard games in the same list, where 10 games cost $14.55. A system carries no discount and no surcharge, and Lotterywest charges the same in store and online.

What the money buys is coverage: every combination of your chosen numbers, so one good draw can pay several games at once. The next section shows how that plays out for a System 8.

What a System 8 wins

Because the 8 games share most of their numbers, one result pays several of them together. The table counts the winning games in a System 8 for each outcome, using Lotterywest’s division rules.

Your odds with a system

A system doesn’t change the odds of a single game; it changes how many games you hold. Division 1 is 1 in 62,891,499 per game, so the whole entry’s chance is that figure divided by its games.

A System 8 and eight standard games cost about the same and hold the same 8 chances at Division 1. The difference is overlap.

The games in a System 8 share six of their seven numbers with each other, so wins arrive together: when your numbers come up, several games pay in the same draw. Eight separate games spread across more numbers, so they win or miss more independently.

Systems 13 to 19

Lotterywest’s price list says Oz Lotto system tickets are available up to System 19, and its FAQ lists Systems 4 to 6 and 8 to 19. The price list stops at System 12, so we can’t give a WA price for anything bigger, or for System 4. The number of games is simple combination maths:

System 4 works like Systems 5 and 6: your 4 numbers plus every combination of three more from the barrel, which comes to 12,341 games.

Sales close and where to buy

Lotterywest closes Oz Lotto sales at 6:00 pm AWST on Tuesdays. That’s 8:00 pm AEST, or 9:00 pm AEDT in NSW, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania once daylight saving starts on 4 October.

Big systems are often shared, and Lotterywest lists syndicates among its ways to play Oz Lotto. If you split a system with friends or workmates, write down who paid which share before the draw; it saves a long conversation afterwards.

Lotterywest also lets you enter most Lotto games up to nine weeks in advance, so a system doesn’t have to be bought on the day.

In WA, Lotterywest’s prices above apply at retailers and online. We couldn’t check prices outside WA, because The Lott’s site doesn’t open from our location, and Oz Lotteries doesn’t sell to WA or Queensland residents. After the draw, the Tuesday Oz Lotto results show every dividend.

Does a system improve my odds?

Each game keeps its odds of 1 in 62,891,499 for Division 1. The entry as a whole has more chances because it holds more games: 8 in a System 8, 792 in a System 12.

When do Oz Lotto sales close?

Lotterywest closes Oz Lotto sales at 6:00 pm AWST on Tuesdays, which is 8:00 pm AEST, or 9:00 pm AEDT in NSW, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania from 4 October.

Are Oz Lotto winnings taxed?

Recreational gambling winnings are not taxed in Australia (ATO ruling IT 2655). The exception the ATO describes is someone carrying on a business of betting or gambling.
